MANIFEST

Manifest Urban Arts Festival: the ultimate showcase of creative talent.

Columbia College Chicago invites you to our annual showcase on Friday, May 12, to celebrate the student work that only our students can create. At Manifest, you’ll encounter thought-provoking gallery exhibitions, live performances, fashion shows, original game design, literary readings and more–all curated by the talent that defines our campus.

In addition to seeing the cutting-edge work of our students and organizations, rock out to musical performances by student bands and DJs on three outdoor stages. The day will culminate with a national headliner.

Manifest will happen on the Columbia College Chicago campus on South Wabash Avenue between 9th and 11th streets. The event is free and open to the public.

ThirdWorld Press and Institute of Positive Education, Inc. presents Nation Studies 2017 series…

Young Black men are being bombarded with toxic messages about masculinity that need to constantly be deconstructed and restored for them to maintain optimal mental health. Join us for a discussion about the intersections between state violence and intercommunity violence, current and historical trauma, hip hop, love, education, and manhood. It will include a multimedia presentation that offers insight about the necessity of cultural identity, good character, literacy, the will to resist, compassionate relationships and critical thinking in the minds and hearts of young Black men.

Chicago Kids and Kites Festival presented by Country Financial

A favorite family event and a harbinger of springtime in Chicago, the 19th Annual Chicago Kids and Kites Festival presented by COUNTRY Financial returns to Cricket Hill in Lincoln Park (Montrose and Wilson) on Saturday, May 6, from 10am to 4pm. Admission is FREE.

New this year, the Windjammers International Kite Team will thrill the crowd with their synchronized kite flying maneuvers, and once again, the City of Chicago will provide kite kits for children to build, decorate and fly, while supplies last.

One of the highlights of the festival is the Big Kite Candy Drop – a piñata-like kite filled with candies that drop from the sky – will take place in the afternoon, weather permitting. Other activities include face painting, balloon artists and crafts.

Chicago Kite will be onsite for kite buyers, and professional kite flyers will demonstrate their skills with oversized and uniquely-shaped kites.

Chicago Free Black Women’s Library Pop-up

Inspired by The Free Black Women’s Library, a monthly mobile library pop-up organized by Ola Ronke in NYC, a small group of Black women in Chicago have come together for the 2nd year to celebrate Black women and girls through books.

This day-long event will be centered on a free library of books written by or about Black women and girls. Join us for healing sessions, teach-ins, collage/bookmaking workshops, readings (including the Johnson Publishing Archive + Collections), etc. Attendees will be able to take and share books throughout the day. Bring a book and take a book.

The Summit’s theme is “We The People”, with the day organized and facilitated to get attendees’ participation and contributions. The Summit is focused on the development of a more localized and cooperative food economy and system enabling community wealth building, greater control over resources, and building on existing assets within communities.

Young Life Black Male Symposium

 

Looking for positive Black Male Christians ages 22-35 to get involved in serving youth in their community. There is a dire need for male mentor-ship on the South Side of Chicago. Come learn about how Young Life addresses the needs of teenagers on the south side and learn how you can join our team. If you are chosen to be part of our volunteer leader team you will receive a$200 stipend for successfully completing training. Must be registered to participate. Interviews will take place after completing training.

What’s Blooming on Harrison” in 1999.

Over the years, this family-oriented May event has highlighted the District through artist demonstrations, live music, dance performances and an art fair featuring select guest artists and local crafts people.  2017’s festival kicks off with a Third Friday Gallery Walk on May 19th.  On Saturday, May 20th, “What’s Blooming” moves outside taking over Harrison Street, from Cuyler Avenue to Humphrey, with the art fair and other Family Fun Activities including a children’s carnival, live music, dance, craft demonstrations and hands-on workshops. The  festival begins at 11 am with the art fair running until 7 pm. There will be an after party at the Taylor Ave. Beer Garden and main stage.

SPRING ART FESTIVAL AT OAKBROOK CENTER

This year’s festival features ceramics, fiber, glass, jewelry, and wood. The Spring Art Festival will take place Saturday and Sunday, rain or shine.

“The Spring Art Festival creates an art and cultural oasis along Oakbrook Center’s already elegant exterior mall, which features beautiful open walk ways among trees, plants, flowers, signature stores and restaurants,” says Amy Amdur, president of Amdur Productions, “Festival goers will have the opportunity to find one-of-a-kind works of art, which are great gifts for this season’s weddings and graduations, as well as indulgences for the home.”

Free and open to the public, the Spring Art Festival will showcase the work juried artists from across the country in a variety of mediums, highlighting painting, photography jewelry, fashion, glass and functional art. Along with the incredible artwork available for purchase, attendees will be able to interact with artists through demonstrations and booth chats.

Chicago’s Memorial Day Parade

Will begin at 11am at the Eternal Flame on Daley Plaza (Dearborn and Washington Streets). The parade will step off at noon and proceed south on State Street from Lake Street to Van Buren Street.

The Chicago parade is considered one of the largest Memorial Day parades in the nation. Since 1870, Memorial Day parades have graced the streets of Chicago.
